Mokai is named after the New Zealand canyon famous for the filming of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong. Why?? We’re not sure…but we do know that it just may be the sexiest party in all of South Florida on a Tuesday night (watch out Delano). High-end clubs and lounges on South Beach tend to be difficult to get in regularly, but there are only a very select few that can truthfully say they take exclusivity to another level…but would you expect any less from the people who brought us Mynt?? There are only two ways
get in: try to snap up one of the tables (which sellout fast) or hope to get one of the coveted spaces on their guest list…along with all of the other celebs you regularly see on the Grammys, Oscars and ESPY award shows. Lacking star power? They request that “sexy people only” petition for the remaining slots…and if that wasn’t enough, you MUST arrive before the place gets packed…usually around 1AM. Mokai is a very small club and not even star status will gain you entry once they are at capacity (rumor has it that Serena Williams had to wait outside 45 min one night). Something has to be said about a club that is so exclusive that even celebs aren’t guaranteed immediate entry.
But once you are past that iron velvet rope, that’s when all of the pretensions end. Hidden safely away from pesky paparazzi, these celebs, VIPs & high rollers are here to have fun. Tuesday’s DJ supplies powerful mixes that fuel nonstop dancing and because it is so small and cozy, the vibe feels like an intimate house party being thrown in an A-lister’s NYC loft. Groups of people mesh into each other and there is none of that cliquish behavior seen at other Miami clubs. This isn’t a see and be seen joint because everyone is somebody here… and when we say the entire club is one big VIP we mean it…it looks like 90% of the room is taken up by those über fabulous VIP tables with their big, black, beefy wrap around leather couches (is that alligator skin??) and every single one of them is taken. Apparently being exclusive isn’t the only way that the owners wanted to stand out. Most of the other clubs on the beach are decorating with whites and metals, Mokai bathed its spot in deep dark jewel tones, huge heavy VIP sections, stone walls and creative lighting. Even the staff is designer in their custom Hugo Boss attire… and there is plenty of staff to make sure that your glass is always full or that you never run out of table mixers. Now if you could only get on that list…
Why It’s Hot: Despite being ultra exclusive, Mokai has one of the best vibes we have seen on the beach. Whether you plan to dance the night away or just chill with friends, this club makes it easy to do both.
Why It’s Not: Warning, unless you are able to grab one of the quick-selling tables or can secure a coveted spot on their guest list, the closest you will ever get to the inside of Mokai is by reading this review.
